MPSN is a nonprofit tax-exempt organization. Depending upon the class size, MPSN spends $3,000 - $5,000 per intern for operating the two-month summer program. Administrative services for the year-round planning and the summer operation of the program is provided almost entirely on a voluntary basis.

The summer program is funded by contributions from alumni, Islamic centers, forward-looking Muslims, and individuals as their investment in the future generations of American Muslim leaders. These contributions provide the major source of funding that covers housing, meals, and local transportation. Accepted interns will be required to pay a fee of $1,500 (payable in two installments of $750) and externs a fee of $700 (payable in two installments of $350). Interns accepted to the program are responsible for their own travel expenses to and from DC, unless they additionally qualify for assistance for travel. All interns accepted into the program are provided accommodations, internship-related transportation, and other program related services. All incidental costs such as personal clothing, laundry, medicine, and entertainment must be covered by the intern. In order to assist those interns who need financial assistance, MPSN has established a financial aid program. Interns, whose internships are unpaid and who demonstrate financial need, may apply for a full or partial waiver of the MPSN program fee. MPSN recommends to also seek private sponsors for your internship to assist with the cost of the program fee. All private donations that are raised to sponsor your internship will be deducted from your program fee.

Externships

While the residential component is an integral part of the summer experience, MPSN recognizes the special circumstances of some applicants who have their own housing in Washington DC. For qualified applicants with these circumstances, MPSN has designated a limited number of “Extern” slots.

Externs are expected to fully participate in a minimum of two-thirds of MPSN programmatic activities (including seminars, etc.), and must ensure their commute is not an obstacle to this participation.

If you have secured independent housing arrangements (non-MPSN) for the summer, you must indicate so to the Admissions Director when submitting your application. Please note the Summer Program fee for externs (participants who have secured non-MPSN housing) is $700.
